Sistem of a Down

System of a Down (también conocida por su acrónimo, SOAD) es una banda de Metal Alternativo formada en Los Ángeles, California de ascendencia armenia y estadounidense, en el año 1995. En un comienzo se llamaron Soil, pero luego adoptaron el nombre System of a Down inspirados por el poema Victims of a Down, escrito por el guitarrista Daron Malakian. Son famosos por realizar canciones en cuyas letras se manifiestan en contra del maltrato infantil, la violencia, la guerra, los genocidios, la pornografía y el machismo, el predominio de los intereses materialistas en la sociedad, las desigualdades sociales, físicas e ideológicas, la intolerancia o la discriminación, entre otros. 

Es la primer banda desde The Beatles que ha alcanzado dos veces la cima de ventas de álbumes en Estados Unidos en el mismo año, con Mezmerize e Hypnotize.1

Está compuesta por Serj Tankian (composición, voz, teclado y ocasionalmente guitarra), Daron Malakian (composición, guitarra y voz), Shavarsh Odadjian (bajo) y John Dolmayan (batería).

En sus cinco discos editados hasta la fecha, System of a Down usa una amplia gama de instrumentos, incluyendo, Daron usaba guitarras eléctricas barítonas, mandolina eléctricas, cítaras, guitarras clásicas de 12 cuerdas (tiple), y otros instrumentos de Asia. Sus influencias más notables provienen de las bandas que empezaron con el heavy metal. También tuvieron influencias de géneros como el jazz fusión, folk, hard rock, rock psicodélico, funk, blues e industrial.[cita requerida] Además tienen influencias políticas, que se reflejan en sus discursos contra el sistema estadounidense, la inconsciencia social y el abuso de poder. También participaron en el año 2006 del documental Screamers de la directora Carla Garapedian, señalando los horrores del genocidio moderno que comenzó en Armenia en 1915 a pesar de Darfur en la actualidad, dicho documental sigue a la banda por una gira en EE. UU. y Europa.
